Fight Plant Stress with BioNutrients & More

BioNutrients Soluble 8-0-9, BioNutrients, Total Pak Injectable.
August 2015

The year so far has been one of weather extremes: a bitterly cold winter that damaged a wide range of plants; an excessively wet and rainy late spring followed by drought-like conditions in early summer; and now sweltering temperatures.

Unpredictable and uncontrollable abiotic factors, such as these, put a lot of stress on turf and ornamentals. Stressed plants need help to regain their strength, fend off disease, and look their best.

There are several products that we consider "magic bullets" which we can recommend. These highly concentrated products put the power of Mother Nature into technologically advanced liquid solutions and dry solubles that are both easy to apply, and absolutely safe to use. Two of my favorite products, for bringing plants out of stress and restoring vigor, are BioNutrients 8-0-9TM and BioNutrientsTM Total Pak Injectable.

BioNutrients 8-0-9

BioNutrients 8-0-9 contains natural plant extracts, humic acids, long-chain carbohydrates, L-amino acids, wild yeast, and impressive amounts of several types of beneficial bacteria. These ingredients - all of which are 100 percent organic - turn soils that have been depleted by environmental stresses into life-promoting bioactive soils that support healthy root and top growth.

Designed for fairways, sports turf, lawn care and trees, BioNutrients 8-0-9 is a relatively new product. All my clients who have tried it, love it. It's an easy-to-handle and easy-to-store dry soluble (it comes in 8-oz. foil packs; in 5, 10, and 50 lb. pails; and in 200 lb. drums). It quickly dissolves in liquids, has a near-neutral pH, and can be tank-mixed with most pesticides, fertilizers and micronutrients.

A small amount of BioNutrients goes a long way, making it an economical choice for turf professionals. Just one 8-oz package, dissolved in 50 gallons of water, can cover 1 to 2 acres.

BioNutrients Total-Pak Injectable

Another relatively new product that landscape managers and arborists particularly appreciate is BioNutrients Total-Pak Injectable. In addition to containing four strains of rhizobacteria to improve soil and plant health, BioNutrients Total-Pak has 11 different strains of mycorrhizal fungi. The mycorrhizae colonize the soil and create thin filaments that attach to plants' root hairs. With the boost provided by the filaments, plants benefit from improved nutrient, mineral and water uptake.

The Total-Pak injectable also contains a large array of biologically active soil conditioners, a natural wetting agent, humic acid, kelp extracts and seven micronutrients, including Boron, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Magnesium, Molybdenum, and Zinc.

Many of you have already used Total Pak with great success when transplanting trees or installing new ornamental plantings. But Total Pak is also an ideal product to counteract the stress, that established trees and ornamentals are experiencing now, due to this year's weather extremes. It is excellent for both evergreens and deciduous plants, and is best applied by injection, into the root zone, at depths of 4" to 8".

Other tools to fight plant stress

TKO Phosphite 0-29-26 is another arrow to put into your quiver when it comes to helping stressed out plants. TKO contains potassium and phosphite (PO3), a liquid form of phosphorus that is rapidly absorbed through a plant's leaves, stems and crowns. Once absorbed, phosphite boosts the plant's defense mechanisms. Based on extensive studies, researchers think the phosphite encourages the thickening of plants' cell walls and causes plants to secrete stress-fighting enzymes.

You also want to keep in mind the importance of plants' basic nutritional needs, and use the right N-P-K fertilizer.
