Efficacy of Foliar Fertilizer on Curly Parsley Growth Data, with Reduced Nitrogen Rates for Improved Nitrogen Management

Objective: Examine the effects of several commercial foliar fertilizers, at both conventional and reduced Nitrogen rates, on the harvest weight and height of curly parsley

Method: Replicas of curly parsley were planted at a research facility in Labelle, Florida, in the late fall of 1999. Two applications each, of the foliar fertilizers, were applied to selected curly parsley seedlings, one application before the first harvest, and the others after the first and second harvests. Replicas that received no treatments served as an Untreated Control. Nitro®+K (22-0-16), a Slow Release Nitrogen product, was applied at a rate of 3-gallons/Acre (5.4 lbs. Nitrogen). Urea was applied at rate of 20 lbs./Acre (9.2 Lbs. Nitrogen). Cytokin®, a plant bioregulator concentrate product was applied at 8-oz/Acre. Bio-Forge™2-0-3, a commercial foliar urea nitrogen and potash product was applied at a rate of 1-pint/Acre. Two harvests were made during the duration of the trial.

Evaluations: Weight (ounces) and Height (cm) was recorded and averaged from the two harvests. Assessments were made prior to the first harvest and after each of the two harvests.

Results: Nitro®+K, not only performed better than the Untreated Control, but also went unmatched versus the other commercial foliar products of Urea, Bio-Forge™, Cytokin, and a combination treatment of Urea + Cytokin®, none of which yielded higher weights or heights, after harvests, as compared to the Untreated Control. Nitro®+K was applied at a rate of 58% less Nitrogen than the Urea Nitrogen and realized 68% greater weight and 4.7% increase in height as compared to the Urea treated parsley replicas, after harvest. Nitro®+K showed an increase in both weight and height from the applications previous to harvest and after the harvests of 62% and 46% respectively.
